Concrete Preparation Before Epoxy

Preparation determines whether the coating bonds to strong concrete or to something weak on top of it.

Why surface preparation cannot be skipped

Concrete can look clean while still carrying curing compounds, dust, laitance, sealers or dense trowel marks. Epoxy needs a mechanically profiled, sound surface. Sweeping and acid washing are not a universal substitute for controlled grinding.

What diamond grinding does

Diamond tooling removes weak surface material and many coatings while creating a more suitable profile. The floor is then vacuumed with appropriate dust extraction. Edges and corners need separate attention; leaving a glossy perimeter can create a weak boundary.

Moisture and contamination

Dark patches, efflorescence or a history of moisture should be investigated. Deep oil can migrate back through prepared concrete. No responsible quote should guarantee performance over an unresolved moisture or contamination problem.

Cracks, joints and repairs

Static defects may be repaired with compatible materials, but movement joints are functional and structural movement can return. The scope should distinguish cosmetic repairs from structural remediation.

Questions to ask an installer

  • Which mechanical preparation method is included?
  • How are old coatings and oil handled?
  • Which cracks are repaired and which joints remain?
  • What moisture limitations apply?
  • How is dust controlled?
